This movie has had me excited since I saw the first trailer for the movie.
It reminded me so much of the Brothers Grimm (http://adf.ly/K4aGo),
and I loved that movie so I had high hopes for this movie. There was absolutely
no let down from this movie at all! (Except for a few tiny easily overlooked
details)
Graphics:
The CGI for this movie was down very smartly. There was a large amount of
effort but into making sure that the camera angles would be the best angle to
get the best shot for the work that was down with both giants and humans within
the same scenes. There is also a lot detail work put into the looks of each and
every giant to make them the grotesque monsters that they are. I noticed this
when there was a scene of a giant picking up something very small and you could
see the lines of his fingerprints on his hands.
There were a few 3D shots within the movie that were just not executed
well, but I have seen many worse ones. Sadly, there was this awkward animated part to the story telling in the beginning that really bugged me for some strange reason.
Scenery:
The shooting location was perfect. The work put into the castle scenes were
exquisite. They truly gave the air of a castle. I wish there had been a little
bit more seen of the giant’s home town because there is just so much left to
the imagination for me.
Acting:
The acting is this movie was nice. There were a few moments that I got hung
up on the fact that some actors were in other movies. Those moments would get
resolved the moment I realized what other movie they had a role. My favorite
two actors would have to be Eleanor Tomlinson who plays the Princess Isabelle
and Ewan McGregor as the knight Elmont. They both seemed to just fit both the
look and part of the roles.
Plot:
The plot was a refreshing twist to the tale of Jack and those pesky beans that took a little bit to get going but once it did, it didn't slow down.. There
are still plenty of new points to the movie that it doesn’t feel like some over
played story line. I thoroughly enjoyed the changes that they added and that
they did not focus all of the attention on some kind of a love story. There was
the perfect amount of action, romance, and twists.
Overall:
I have already determined that I will be buying this movie and watching it
on repeat; now if only it was already on DVD. The humor that was used in this
movie was nice; mostly because it was not shoved in my face the whole time.
There were a few moments that threw me back through (and I also jumped twice
during the movie). One scene is a far too close of shot of a giant’s face for
me. There is also a scene where three humans try to hide from a giant and chose
behind a tree, behind a rock, and last but not stupidly enough under water. I
say this mostly because if I had been in that moment I would have most likely
froze and thought of about zero hiding spots. I would also like to know what
kind of products that Jack uses on his hair because he fell from the bean stalk
as it was falling, swung off on a vine, and then landed in a hay stack and two
seconds later, his hair was perfectly in place. I’m just not buying it…
I loved this movie and am completely satisfied; I give the movie a 9.5/10!
Also I paid for the iMax 3D and would have settled for the iMax part alone.
